The city of Durham is situated in County Durham in the North East of England on the banks of the River Wear. The centre of the city lies on seven hills, with its famous Norman cathedral perched atop the largest of these overlooking the river's meandering path and heavily wooded shores.
Durham has centuries of fascinating history behind it and is home to many beautiful ancient buildings, such as its eleventh century castle that lies opposite the cathedral on the peninsula that is formed by a large bend in the river.
Central Durham is home to charming winding cobbled streets with historic architecture wherever you look, giving it a timeless quality, which attracts huge numbers of visitors every year.
Another point of interest is Durham's traditional market that dates back to the Victorian era, offering fine local produce and regularly hosting a variety of street entertainment. The centre is also home to plenty of excellent bars, cafes and restaurants.
